As we discussed yesterday, we set off again to look for a better place to stay for our planned vacation. We actually find what we are looking for. The room is very small, smells a little musty, but we are only 30 meters from the beach for almost the same price as in the terraced hut complex. “Let’s drive to the end of the beach again,” I say. “Why is that? We have a room now.” “Just because. There’s no reason.”
At the very end of Otres beach, we land on a large plot of land with a bar. Behind it are four brand new, spacious rooms right by the sea. “It looks fantastic and there’s still a room available,” I enthuse when I get back to Tanja. “How much does it cost?” “US$ 60. I know that’s too expensive, but I’ll go back to the manager and try to negotiate.” Just 10 minutes later, I pushed the price down to US$ 45. Unfortunately still far above our budget. A little dejected, we cycle back to our row of huts and load up our bikes to move to the new communal room. “Actually, we are stupid. If we stay for 10 days, we only pay US$ 250 more than in the tiny room, which is relatively dark and even smells of mold. Is the better room not worth the extra US$ 250? Life is short. We’ve been on the road for almost two years now and haven’t taken a vacation yet. We’ve been sitting on our bikes all the time, you’ve been taking photos every day, archiving pictures and writing. That can’t be right. I’m giving you the US$ 250 as a birthday present,” says Tanja. “My birthday was back in January,” I interject jokingly. “You know what I mean.” “Of course I do and I completely agree with you. We should take the nice room,” I say, full of anticipation at having finally found a dream place for us.
Fortunately, when we arrive back at the resort with our bikes, the room is still available. We are as happy as little children about the accommodation in front of the two sun loungers. “Unbelievable, we even have our own beach here,” I cheer. “You could stay there forever,” Tanja joins in my joy. “It’s a good thing the evil Frenchman drove us out. Otherwise we would never have come here.” “Absolutely. It just goes to show once again that supposedly bad things aren’t always bad,” says Tanja.
In the evening, we sit in front of the bungalow and look out over a white sandy beach to the peaceful Gulf of Thailand. The sun makes every effort to impress us with exploding red colors. A fishing boat seems to be chugging directly into the sinking fireball. His silhouette stands out like a black silhouette against the glistening light. Without a doubt, we have landed in the center of paradise…
