At midnight, I’m still reeling from the day’s experiences and can’t sleep. Tired, I look out of the window and think I can see another aurora stripe in the sky. “Can’t be”, I whisper, because being able to photograph the Northern Lights at the North Cape is a rarity due to persistently bad weather, low-hanging clouds and fog. I immediately jump up and slip into my clothes. “I think there are northern lights. Do you want to come?” I ask Tanja. No answer. “Tanja! Do you want to come?” I ask again, to which I only get an indefinable mumble. So as not to lose any time, I jump out of the Terra with Ajaci. In fact, a slight aurora can be seen above the landmark of the North Cape. “We have to hurry,” I say to Ajaci, set up the tripod, click the camera onto it, set it to interval release and climb up to the globe with my dog. At this moment, the aurora borealis intensifies, arching over us and the nearby Arctic Ocean. “Unbelievable!” I shout enthusiastically, whereupon Ajaci shares my euphoria with a loud howl. The sky is once again starry. What’s more, the full moon rises ever higher into the sparkling and glittering Milky Way. Drunk with joy, I enjoy the natural spectacle and feel as if I’ve just found a gold nugget. As if I’m in a time warp, it passes so quickly that I forget to take any photos. Suddenly the northern lights have disappeared again. As I wanted to take more pictures, I’m disappointed at first. What the heck, I’ve found my treasure, I think to myself. On the way back to our off-road vehicle, I admire the visitor center, which, although there are no visitors at this time, is brightly lit and shines in every imaginable color under the starry firmament…
