So begins one of the incredible stories of the famous adventurer Denis Katzer. In a probably unique, extremely exciting, technically perfectly realized and very worth seeing multivision show, the extreme traveler tells of his sometimes hair-raising contacts with now perhaps already extinct indigenous peoples that he visited during his early expeditions.
Suddenly there is uproar and shouting. The Auca Indians gather around two large pots in a straw hut lit only by the fire. The huge containers are reminiscent of cannibal stories in Africa, in which people were cooked according to old tales. Women, men and children unabashedly reach in with their hands and fish out bones and pieces of meat. “Ööörrrr!”, the sounds of eating quickly demand my attention. Curious, I approach slowly to see what’s simmering in the pots. I jump back a step in horror as my gaze into one of the pots reveals vertebrae, hands and limbs of all kinds. My eyes wander, mesmerized, to the other pot. Naked horror, nausea and fear seize me as I notice the burst heads with shaved hair and bulging eyes in their own brew. “Cannibalism!” I shout with a huff. Gallo, our friend and guide, laughs out loud. “What’s there to laugh about?” I ask in horror. “Only mono” (monkeys), he says…
