RED EARTH EXPEDITION - Stage 1

If I had no pain, I would be a happy person

    Day: 39

Heart Camp – 19.06.2000

The medication has greatly reduced the pain and I am able to write these lines. Of course, sitting for hours on end doesn’t agree with me either, but somehow I have to keep going. The weather is extremely bad, it’s been storming for three days now. Again and again it rains heavily and Tanja and I try to keep up our morale. At lunchtime, I grab another fleece sweater from my rucksack. I open one of the buckles when suddenly a small scorpion makes a break for it next to my hand. I could have done with being stung by one of those poisonous creepy-crawlies. Regardless of my condition, the daily routine must continue. Tanja now has to look after the camels alone in the mornings and evenings. I can hardly be of any help to her. According to her, she is struggling to keep the five animals under control. Sometimes they suddenly storm through the undergrowth or onto the nearby open field for no apparent reason. Potato and lentil stew is served in the evening. If it were a sunny, rain-free and pain-free day, I would be a happy person.
