Although we know that the existence of our Red Earth Expedition is at risk, we try not to think about it. I’m writing our new book every day, meeting with sponsors, conducting interviews and working on the next stage as if nothing had happened. Around noon, David calls me to tell me that he has discovered the tracks. I have to learn that the footprints lead through the flooded area to the west, exactly where there is no fence. Thank goodness there is an obstacle in this direction that will prevent even camels from getting any further, as the endless Indian Ocean stretches out to the west. David assumes they will walk either north or south along the beach until they hit farmland again. The danger is that there can sometimes be holes in the farm fences through which they can escape towards the Great Sandy Desert. Since camels are considered pests in Australia and are allowed to be shot, there is also the danger that they will be shot by hunters on the neighboring farms. “I’ve informed Mandora Station and Frazier Downs,” David reassures me, whereupon Tanja and I take hope.
