LINK TO THE ITINERARY

“Ahhh!” I let out a cry of horror as one of the many camper vans thunders past us on a narrow road and misses our left wing mirror by just a few centimetres. “I can’t believe it. He’s never had his driving under control,” I vent, cursing under my breath. “It’s a good thing you drove so slowly,” says Tanja. We are surprised at the crazy caravan traffic on Norway’s roads. Some of the vacationers drive their large mobile as if they had done nothing else all their lives. At least that’s what you might think when they speed through roadworks, along poor, narrow country roads and around tight bends. We don’t just experience a dicey situation once a day. “That’s because some tourists rent such a big warhorse especially for their vacation without ever having driven one,” a gas station attendant tells us. “That explains a lot,” I say to Tanja as we drive over an unpaved section of roadworks a little later and a motorhome touches down on a stone right in front of us. The driver doesn’t seem to have noticed, because he just drives on. Even though we are travelling in a highly civilized country, we have to reckon with the ignorance and naivety of the many self-drivers during the high season. According to statistics, Norway was visited by 6.25 million tourists in 2017. That is 1.2 tourists per inhabitant. Norway generated 5.77 billion euros a year from tourism alone.

With even more mindfulness than before, we enjoy a country that literally overwhelms us with its beauty. “Stop there, please!” says Tanja as soon as we have left our camp site. We use the break to take Ajaci for a walk along the banks of a rushing river. Summer in Norway seems to be exploding here. Insects buzz through the pleasantly warm air. Flowers stretch their colorful calyxes towards the sun to give their nectar in abundance to everything that flies and crawls. While I try to capture the splendor with my photo, Ajaci sits down on a rock and waits patiently. The individual spots are so beautiful that we would love to stay a day to enjoy them. But, we have a destination and continue north towards the cape…
