Hulongine-Camp – 30.05.2000

The journey continues at 10.40 am. With the last possible connection via the mobile network, I try to call the skin specialist again. About two months ago I discovered a strange spot on my left nostril. Even before the expedition began, this spot was iced over twice. “If it comes back now, you should see a specialist,” said the doctor. When I asked if the little thing could be skin cancer, he replied: “That can never be ruled out!”

I am now standing behind the sheltering trunk of a mighty tree in the strong wind so that I can better understand the doctor’s assistant. “Yes, we will most likely reach Goomalling tomorrow. Friends of ours live there and I have the opportunity to get to them in Perth with our car that is parked there!” I shout into the phone to drown out the wind noise. Suddenly the connection breaks down again. Cursing, I dial again to confirm the appointment. I am relieved when the appointment is secured. I am thinking of Claudia and Angelika who gave me this contact on their last visit. Normally this is not easy and there are waiting times of up to 6 weeks. A little more confidently, I now walk ahead of the caravan again. We reach campsite 8 in the evening, where a strong, unpleasantly cold wind blows dark clouds across the sky.

Before we go to bed, we give Jafar an anti-inflammatory drug. Tanja sprinkles it on a sandwich according to Jo’s instructions and puts it in Jafar’s mouth. It seems to taste good to him, because he wants more of it. “It will help him,” says Jo with a smile and pats his neck. We go to bed soon afterwards, absolutely exhausted. It rains for the first time that night.
