Why Pinion supports Tanja & Denis Katzer on their Great Journey.
Since more than 1991, Tanja and Denis Katzer have stood for one of the most extraordinary expeditions of our time. Their “Great Journey” is not a project, but a life’s work: hundreds of thousands of kilometers through extreme climate zones, across high mountains, deserts, steppes and remote regions – with the aim of not only crossing the world, but really understanding it.
It is precisely this attitude that corresponds to Pinion’s philosophy. We develop and produce our products in Germany – not for the showroom, but for real-life use under conditions in which technology has to function without compromise.
With the Pinion Motor Gearbox Unit (MGU), Tanja and Denis rely on an encapsulated drive solution for their current Riese & Müller touring bikes, which has been specially developed for the highest continuous loads. The MGU combines a powerful electric motor and sophisticated manual transmission technology with twelve electronically shifted gears in a single, enclosed unit – protected from dust, water, mud and extreme temperature fluctuations. These features are particularly crucial on long-distance expeditions, far away from any workshop infrastructure.
While conventional derailleur and hub gears have to be regularly readjusted, cleaned or replaced, the Pinion gearbox is virtually maintenance-free and works with lasting precision – even under heavy loads, with heavy luggage and in changing climatic conditions. For Tanja and Denis, this means less risk of failure, more reliability and maximum concentration on the essentials – traveling.

Their experiences flow directly into the further development of our systems and provide valuable feedback from an area of use that represents the absolute extreme even for high-end e-bikes.
