On the day we said goodbye, we drove along the coastal road of Senja to circle the island. At the end of the headland between Steinfjord and Ersfjord, the Oksen mountain massif, whose pointed rock needles pierced the cloudy sky, bid us farewell with dramatic images. Storm-whipped waves thundered against the rocky shore with a rustic roar. The spray was spraying as high as a house into the cloudy, dull sky. “Wow!” we marveled and thanked Mother Earth for the fascinating time at Steinfjord.
As we cruised along at peace with ourselves and our lives, another near-miss tore us from our liturgy. We came within a hair’s breadth of being rammed by a truck in the middle of a narrow tunnel. “Phew, what luck we had!” I moan loudly, whereupon Ajaci opens his eyes again and makes a grunt-like sound to tell me that he finally wants to go back to Tanja in the car. “Yes, I’ll soon be at the end of our journey,” I say, whereupon he puts his head down again with a soft “Woof!”.
I think of the largest tidal stream in the world, along whose banks we were walking just a few days ago, watching the loudly murmuring and dangerously rushing whirlpools that pull everything that floats on them into the depths. We were so impressed by the Atlantic Road, which was declared the Norwegian construction of the century, that we drove along it several times so that we could photograph it from different perspectives. Not forgetting Lisa and Patrick with their social commitment in Africa, with whom we spent two days. And now, at the end, the rearing winter that wouldn’t let us out of its clutches when it put icy roads, uncleared passes, freezing lakes, rivers and waterfalls in our path yesterday and the day before yesterday.
“What a journey, on which we crossed 632 bridges, drove through 415 tunnels and used 8 ferries in just under 12,000 kilometers. What fantastic, impressive and unforgettable experiences we had. It soon seemed to me as if we had been the main characters in a magical, fairytale-like story. A feeling of melancholy overcomes me. I shake my head at Ajaci, who seems to pick up on my mood and looks at me trustingly and lovingly with his dark brown eyes. “It was a great time. What do you think, my dear?” “Wooouuuuuiii!” he howls in confirmation, whereupon I shiver and get up to go to Tanja’s Terra Love to enjoy her delicious dinner and drink a can or two of Danish beer…
