Despite 9 hours of sleep I feel tired and exhausted because last night I was still copying, numbering and labeling pictures from the cameras into the Itronix until 10:30 pm. Before continuing our journey, we talk to two cyclists who only arrived late yesterday evening. They warn us that the cycle path in Hungary is very bad. “If I were you, I would continue on the Slovakian side. There’s one pothole after another on the first stretch in Hungary. With all your luggage, it’s bound to be a disaster.” The two of them actually wanted to cycle from Passau to the Black Sea. Unfortunately, they had to turn back because one of the brothers had to enrol at the university in person.

Although we pedal along on a fantastic cycle highway, the day turns out to be very strenuous. A strong headwind blows in our faces across the wide Danube. It gets caught in the now even larger front pockets and the entire bike. Tanja ducks into my slipstream and I feel like I’m making a trail through fresh new snow. We struggle along at around 12 to 15 kilometers per hour.

After just 27 kilometers we reach a campsite. “Actually, you should get some rest. Why don’t we stay there and use the afternoon to laze around? You could lie down on the mattress and get some sleep. You need a break too,” Tanja’s words tempt me and I think of my recent communication with Mother Earth. “It’s about 40 kilometers to the next campsite marked on the map,” I reply, studying the map. I ponder for a few moments. “That’s a good idea. Let’s spend the afternoon lazing on the sleeping mat,” I say, pleased with my decision.
