The newsreader of a TV station wakes us up with one of the many horror stories. It is one of the messages with which people in our western world start their day and ask themselves why they are often in a bad mood. The club fan apparently doesn’t want us to die stupid and generously shares his TV program with the rest of those present.
The weather is once again trying to keep our spirits from soaring today. The low-lying fog, the partially harvested fields and wet paths look as if we are in November. The wind blows against us on the long dirt road. It feels like we are constantly cycling up a slight incline. The farmer spreads his manure on the nearby field. He pulls a wagon behind him with his tractor gate from which the manure sprays in a high arc across the field. Unsuspecting, we pedal our luggage on wheels past the stinking colossus that is parallel to our route at this very moment. Although the distance to the stinky part is quite large, the liquid excretions are blown over our heads in a fine mist. Cursing and disgusted, I spit out to get the inhaled shit out of my lungs and mouth. Tanja, who follows me at a close distance, also gets a share of the free gift and really shakes herself on her vehicle.
Donauwörth, the town that became rich in the Middle Ages when a bridge was built over the Danube, welcomes us with its pretty and magnificent town houses. The important trade route between Nuremberg and Augsburg once crossed the major waterway here. Over the course of history, the bridge has been destroyed and rebuilt around thirty times. As in the other villages and towns, here on the Danube you can really feel Germany’s turbulent past. Numerous art-historical treasures, churches, walls and streets transport us to another world, a world whose present is deeply and firmly anchored in an eventful history.
On a side arm of the Danube near Donauwörth we find a lovely spot for the night at the camp site of the local canoe club.
