In fact, it didn’t rain all night. Due to the dew and the evaporation of our breath, the outer shell of our tent is still soaking wet. After a quick breakfast, we pack up and load the bikes. “Are you looking forward to the descent?” I ask Tanja. “And how,” she laughs at me. In just a few minutes, we burn off yesterday’s energy and shoot down the winding road. At the bottom, we take the wrong cycle path. “We have to go back,” I say grudgingly. As punishment, the route goes uphill again. We are just an hour on the road and have arrived at the place where Ingrid and Alfred left us yesterday. Frustrated and hungry, we stop at the nearest bakery and spend our lunch break with fresh cheese rolls and coffee.
The whole day is uphill and downhill. Tanja gets pain in her knee. As there are no campsites in this area and wild camping is forbidden in Germany, I ask a farmer who is mowing a large meadow with his tractor. “You’re welcome to pitch your tent behind my house,” he invites us. Relieved, we visit his property and settle down in the lush, flowering meadow.
